Are you a soldier of the Cross?

We are living in times where tolerance of the true Christian message is getting very low.

Anyone who preaches or speaks the truth as found in God’s Word, the Bible, is being labelled a bigot, fundamentalist or a radical.   Tragic!

Sadly there is criticism of evangelical Christians even from within the church.  Why?   Many have departed from the faith and have given way to a social gospel, compromise and deception.  The pope speaks of evangelical Christians in very derogatory term.

As 1 Timothy 4 states: “Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons”

I will be doing a series of posts very soon about deception in the church, subscribe to this blog today to make sure you do not miss out on the series.

In the meantime, my question is: Are YOU a soldier of the Cross?  A follower of the precious Lamb of God?  Then stand up, speak out and live for Him, who gave His life for you, the only Saviour, the Way, the Truth and the Life.

I leave you with the challenge posed by Isaac Watts (1721) in the that beautiful hymn…

  1. Am I a soldier of the cross,
    A follow’r of the Lamb?
And shall I fear to own His cause,
Or blush to speak His name?
  2. Must I be carried to the skies
    On flow’ry beds of ease,
While others fought to win the prize,
    And sailed through bloody seas?
  3. Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?
Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?
  4. Sure I must fight if I would reign;
    Increase my courage, Lord;
I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain,
    Supported by Thy Word.
  5. Thy saints in all this glorious war
    Shall conquer, though they die;
They see the triumph from afar,
    By faith’s discerning eye.
  6. When that illustrious day shall rise,
    And all Thy armies shine
In robes of vict’ry through the skies,
    The glory shall be Thine.

There is no question about it … the world is so unstable at present.  Economies are tottering – so much national debt.   Morals are in a downward spiral.    People believe the lie rather than the truth.   Violence, insubordination, … As 2 Timothy 3 states:  You should know this, … that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly.”      (New Living Translation)

The question then is this … “Is this the beginning of the end?”

I invite you to watch this video which covers the topic in a brilliant and comprehensive manner.   Amir Tsafati is from Israel and is became a Christian (Messianic Jew) during his high school days.  Since 1999, Amir has been invited to churches, prophecy seminars and conferences around the world, to teach on current events in Israel in light of Bible prophecy. (    Absolutely sound teaching on the subject, do NOT skip any part of the video.  Brilliant and a must to see in these days.

Never before has the world been quite in such a state as it is now … and don’t let anyone try and water that statement down!

Just this past week terrorist attacks have made the headlines yet again.  Innocent folk gunned down or blown to shreds.  News of further attacks imminent!

Over the last few months the migration crisis has been getting completely out of hand with the powers that be not having any answer as to how to deal with the situation.  Thousands pouring into countries, thousands losing their lives in the process.  Illegal immigrants causing chaos at country borders.   The whole situation is totally out of control.

Financially the world is unstable … debt crises, general economic meltdown.
Globalists taking advantage of the fear and panic to pursue their agenda for a “one-world” system. One World Economic order, One World Government …

Churches compromising Biblical Truth and Guidelines to “fit in” with modern society and political correctness.   No clear message being preached from many pulpits any more. Thank God for those churches where the Bible is being taught in its fullness.  Thank the Lord for those ministers and Christians who are not ashamed of the true Gospel of the Lord Jesus and are willing to speak out.

Right has become wrong and wrong, right!

Believe it or not, the Bible tells us that this is exactly what will happen in the last days … the end times (and much, much more!)

I feel so constrained to share this message (which is likely not to be very popular!) as all around me I see such complacency!   People brushing aside the thought of any imminent return of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Rapture of the Church (ekklesia – the called out ones, those who profess faith in and allegiance to Christ) or the Great Tribulation that will come upon the earth after the Rapture of the Church.   So many folk simply laugh off any idea of there being a God OR are of the opinion that all religions are equal, promoting interfaith movements … once again in line with the end-time scenario of a One World Religion.

Dear friends … I cannot stress enough that we are living in days when the return of the Lord is closer than ever before.   We do NOT know the day nor the hour BUT as Jesus Himself said, we can tell the seasons … you and I need to be ready!

Whether you believe the Bible or not, whether you believe what I’m saying or not will not make one iota of difference.   Jesus is alive and He is returning – this time as the Judge and not the Saviour!   The door of opportunity is still open, but we don’t know for how long!

How can you be ready?   Make sure you:

  • repent of your sin (for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God – Romans 3:23);
  • ask the Lord Jesus to cleanse you from all sin and to come into your heart/life and give you eternal life (for God so loved the world, He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life – John 3:16);
  • Make sure you read your Bible every day – a good place to start will be the Gospel of John. (If you haven’t got a Bible, get one.  If you can’t get one, let us know!)
  • Pray (talk to God) and ask Him to help you live for Him moment by moment, day by day.
  • Find a Bible-believing church so that you can get to know other Christians and grow spiritually.

A special word to those who know the Lord Jesus as their Saviour, we need to stop playing church and really get serious in following Jesus very closely, reaching out to the lost and praying.

Leonard Ravenhill once said: even “if the whole church goes off into deception, that will in no way excuse us for not following Christ”.   Stand up for the Truth!

Live expectantly!  Make sure you’ve accepted the pardon that Jesus died to purchase for you. Make sure your friends and family have the opportunity to accept this pardon too!

I close with an extract from John Hagee’s prayer earlier today:

“Father God, we worship You today as the one and only Authority. You are the Alpha and the Omega, the Author and the Finisher of our faith. The world around us may be in utter chaos as our society does its best to destroy us from the inside out…but YOU ARE STILL IN CONTROL!   … You said that the righteous would not be forsaken. Lord, make the crooked way straight for us as we delight ourselves in you, as we use the Word of God to direct our path.  We give you praise and glory today, as we glorify your matchless name! Amen!”

The Suicide Bridge … Bridge of Hope!!

Although an impressive structure just a few milesVan Stadens Bridge outside Port Elizabeth in the south-eastern corner of South Africa, the Van Staden’s Bridge has been the site of at least 87 suicides as at December 2012.

Just recently I had news about a publisher from Jeffrey’s Bay, a sea-side town near to Port Elizabeth, who has had a vision to construct a huge cross on a site overlooking the notorious bridge. The cross would be 14 metres high and would have the words “Jesus loves you” in huge letters (+/- 4 metres high) at the foot of the cross.  The problem was that over R100,000 would be required to achieve this project.  (+/- £7300/$11,000).   Where would this money come from?

Van Stadens CrossThis cross of hope, as it is called, would be there in an endeavour to remind the folk coming to the bridge to take their own lives, that there IS still HOPE.  That Someone cares.    The cross of hope would have a constant message – day and night  – for those who have lost hope, those who have reached the end of their tether.

Back to the vision – the miracle of provision has already started.  Construction companies and steel manufacturers in the Port Elizabeth area were approached by Robbie Hift (the publisher) and are working together to supply and construct the huge cross.  When Robbie contacted the marketing manager at the first steel manufacturing company to explain his vision, she stated “This is not strange.  My own father  jumped off the Van Staden’s Bridge to his death! I know exactly what you are talking about and I will give you all the support I possibly can!”   A company offered to supply all the cement needed to build the foundations for the cross and the four concrete blocks to anchor the steel cables reaching up to the crossbar of the cross.   And so, one after the other, every need is being supplied.

The farmer who owns the mountain on which the cross will be built, has cleared the area & built an access road to the site;Van Stadens Bridge site the best lighting/illumination possible has been organized; a security firm has committed to 24 hour protection from vandals and others who might want to destroy the cross;  the list is endless.  All things are falling into place and the items needed are being wonderfully provided.   What does it prove?   God is in the project!

Robbie Hift goes on to say: “This vision is not just to encourage unfortunate people who might want to jump off the bridge. It is much, much more than that. We want to encourage ALL peoples of ALL nations that God really loves us. Our tears are His tears. Our problems are His problems.  He really wants us to turn to Him in ALL situations and He is the God who can make a way where there is no way.  He is the God of the impossible.”

I would like to ask the readers of my blog to pray with me for this project.  Pray that the Lord will bless and prosper every aspect of the vision as it progresses.  Pray that the Cross will indeed be used of the Lord to point people to the God of all comfort, the great Physician, the Saviour of the world.   Watch the short video made by a friend in Port Elizabeth to remind folk to keep near the Cross and to continue to pray for the project.

The world has become a very cruel, selfish and lonely place.  Folk are finding life increasingly difficult – the economic downturn leading to loss of jobs, financial pressures and feelings of utter desperation.   There is no one quick solution BUT, having Jesus in your life can make all the difference.  Yes, Christians are also caught up in these dreadful situations and also face suicidal thoughts.  But let us remember, Jesus hears the softest cry,   and sees the tears – He knows, He Cares, He loves.

If you, dear reader, are going through the darkest tunnel of your life, please do not struggle on your own.  I have listed some helpful links below.  Feel free to write to me and request prayer and/or helpful literature.  Jesus loves you so dearly.  Reach out to Him, He is reaching out to you … right now!

How to live in the light of the Lord’s imminent return …

“Hold on now … who said anything about the imminence of the Lord’s return?”

That is just the point!   We seldom hear people refer to or preach on the subject dealing with the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.   This is quite tragic really.  The very fact that the Lord could return at any moment (when we least expect Him) is what can help us all as Christians to keep focused and to walk in ways that are pleasing to Him.

Sadly so many Christians and Churches are getting dreadfully side-tracked these Picture globedays on issues that have little or no bearing on the salvation of the lost and walking closely with Jesus.  Recent arguments and discussions about various “issues” are not really helping anyone spiritually.   These are distractions rather than helping us to focus on Him, the Author and Finisher of our faith.

As Christians we have a responsibility to “go and make disciples of all nations” and to “build each other up in our most holy faith, praying in the power of the Holy Spirit” (Matt 28:19 & Jude 1:20).  In fact, the book of Jude is such a gem to study and ends on such a triumphal note in verses 24 & 25.

I know that there will be some reading this blog post who will feel that I am being simplistic.  Be that as it may … “as we await the return of the Lord Jesus, we need to throw and strip off everything that hinders, trips us up or slows us down and the sin that so easily entangles, ensnares or distracts us so that we can run with perseverance and patience the race marked out for us.”  (Free translation of Hebrews 12:1).

It is a great concern to me that we as Christians can so easily find ourselves taking the eye off the ball.  The Lord says in His Word: “…be on your guard, lest your hearts be overburdened and depressed (weighed down) with …worldly worries and cares pertaining to [the [c]business of] this life, and [lest] that day come upon you suddenly like a trap or a noose; … “(Luke 21:34 – Amplified)

young man reading small bibleA Pastor we had in South Africa once shared these five points about living in the light of the Lord’s imminent return.   Each point has Scripture references associated with it and can thus be a practical personal Bible Study for a quiet time with the Lord.

1. Walk in the Spirit Galatians 5:16-26
2. Memorize ScripturePsalm119:11
3. Keep short accounts with God and others – resolve outstanding issues
4. Pray without ceasing1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
5. Be faithful in church attendance and fellowshipActs 2:41-47
6. Learn to know the Power of God in your lifeEphesians 3:20

Any questions or discussion will be most welcome!

From Tragedy to Triumph

I am taking the liberty of sharing a very precious experience and testimony that happened some years ago – a thief on the cross experience ….

A few months ago I read about a tragic incident where a well-known Bishop was asked the question: “If you were at the bedside of a very ill elderly lady and she asked you what was waiting for her after death, what would you say to her?” His reply was: “My dear, I honestly do not know”

As Christians we have the best news to share. You and I have an answer for that lady (and anyone else who may ask a similar question) based on the Word of God.

Let me share a very precious experience I had some 22 years ago whilst working as a Professional Nurse in an Oncology ward in South Africa.

A lovely man (originally from the UK) – very honorable, a former Royal Air Force pilot in the 2nd world war – was stricken with a severe spinal cancer – in extreme pain (for which he was being given appropriate treatment) – his name …. Charles Earnshaw 1

The treatment he was receiving was palliative as the cancer was too advanced. He was a dying man. And yet death wouldn’t come. He appeared to be struggling to die. His body was cold and clammy. He was incredibly weak … but, it was as if he couldn’t die! At least 2 mornings we’d come on duty thinking that Charles would have passed away. … but … he was still clinging on to what little life was left.

A Christian doctor who was looking after him had spoken to him briefly and he had said to her: “I am afraid to die, I do not know what is waiting for me when I die …. I’m really scared”. The doctor told me about this and (although she didn’t need to, I would have done it anyway) asked me if I would be willing to have a chat with him.

The Lord had planned it so that we had adequate staffing that day and it was agreed with the other ward staff that I would spend time with him that day.

I explained to Charles that I would be looking after him that particular day and would be available to listen and to help as much as I could. It wasn’t long and the subject was raised by Charles. He spoke quietly (he was very weak) and said: “I’m afraid to die.” I explained that the Lord Jesus could help Him, could give Him peace. “How can I turn to God now? I’ve ignored him all my life …”

With the Lord’s help I was able to explain and share the story of the thief on the cross. I shared the well-known verse from John 3:16 with him. God then led me to personalize the verse as follows: “For God so loved Charles Earnshaw, that He gave His only begotten Son, that if Charles Earnshaw believes in Him, Charles Earnshaw will not perish but have eternal life”. It was as if a light went on. He was almost startled by the Truth.

As time went on we discussed issues and I tried to answer his questions as best I could.

It is important to remember that during this time, he was in so much pain & would from time to time have medication to ease the pain.

He did not want me to leave him

Around 14h00 that afternoon, I asked Charles if he would like to pray to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as His Saviour. “Yes, please!”

He was physically frightfully weak indeed but his mind was very alert throughout.

Because of the weakness, I offered to pray slowly & allow him to pray quietly and make the prayer his own. We prayed …

When we had finished praying he said amen. I asked him: “Are you glad you have prayed that prayer?” His reply: “I wish I’d prayed it a LONG time ago.”

He never spoke again & at around 14h30, Charles Earnshaw passed away peacefully into the presence of his new-found Friend, his Saviour and Lord -Jesus Christ.

You & I, if we know the Lord as our Saviour, have a life-giving message to proclaim. Never hesitate to share with others that Jesus gives peace, joy and life – life eternal.

Have you read your Bible today?

Helen Cadbury, who started the Pocket Testament League ministry in 1893 as a teenager, desired more than anything that people would just read the Word of God, the Bible. (Helen was the daughter of the President of Cadbury’s chocolates)

Helen said: “If they just read it (God’s Word) for themselves, it will surely lead them to Christ”.

I believe this to be true. It is my prayer that people will read His Word and allow Him to speak to them through the Words they read and in so-doing come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour and Lord.  As a Christian, we need to read His Word in order to grow and be drawn closer to our Saviour.

Why not make it a daily habit to read something from God’s precious Word?

“For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires” (Hebrews 4:12 – NLT). “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105 – NLT).

Have you read the Bible, God’s Word, today?

Can I believe the Bible?

Absolutely you can. I do. I’ve seen how accurate His Word is even in my personal life.

The Bible is a very special book written in time but eternal in nature. It is never out of date and absolutely relevant for the day and age we are living in … in fact, it couldn’t be more so!

Unfortunately, the general attitude in the post-modern, post-Christian society is that folk tend to ignore authority other than their own. The idea of having some other Authority to be recognized or to submit to does not gel well with modern society.

However, it is one of the most amazing experiences to get to know this God of the Bible, through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. I’ve experienced it and therefore I know what I’m talking about.

We need to have some idea of what type of book the Bible is. It is not a scientific text-book. Nor is it a philosophical work designed to describe or prove the existence of God. The Bible is “a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105). And before you decide you’re not in need of guidance and authority, just take a few minutes more to read on ….

The Bible is in fact the account of God’s action in the world and His purpose with all creation. The amazing bit is that the Bible was written over a number of centuries and is the work of over forty human authors. But God-inspired authors!   It is a collection of 66 books with many different styles all containing the message God desires us to have. It is written in various forms such as narratives, dialogues, proverbs, parables, songs, allegories, history and prophecy.

Along with the tremendous diversity there is also a remarkable unity.

In addition the Bible, God’s infallible Word (yes, infallible) provides … a refuge in trouble. People experiencing pain and suffering or going through difficult experiences such as being in prison, mourning, divorce, redundancies, bankruptcies, etc. tell how they found strength and new hope when turning to the Bible in their desperate hours of need. insight as to who we are. We are here for a reason. Knowing God through Jesus Christ, gives us a purpose and a destiny.

Above all, the Bible makes it very clear that the only way to God is through the Lord Jesus Christ.

For further investigation to see if it all stacks up, why not read it for yourself. Remember, there are no contradictions in the Bible. What it says works. Many of the Old Testament prophecies have already been fulfilled in the New Testament. There is factual archeological support for so many activities, sites and occurrences. The Bible has survived and will continue to survive opposition. There are millions of folk who have proved the Bible to be True and Reliable.  I’m one of them, how about you?
